Nearly everyone who's tried to learn something new as an adult has hit the same handful of roadblocks. The good news is that these mistakes are so common precisely because they're predictable, which means they're also fixable once you can actually see them for what they are. Here are the traps that trip people up most often, and the practical way out of each one.

Want expert help putting this into practice? Bogan University can guide you through it.

Mistake One: Trying to Learn Everything at Once

Enthusiasm is a wonderful thing right up until it convinces you to start five new habits, three courses, and a complete life overhaul all in the same week. This almost always ends the same way — total burnout within a fortnight and nothing to show for it except guilt. Learning takes focused attention, and attention split five ways is barely attention at all.

The fix is choosing one thing to genuinely commit to, and deliberately parking the rest for later. It feels frustratingly slow at first, but it's the version that actually finishes.

A useful trick is picking a single obvious sign of "done enough for now" before you even start — a specific skill level, a specific date, or a specific outcome. Without that marker, it's tempting to keep adding more to the pile the moment the first thing starts feeling slightly uncomfortable.

Mistake Two: Confusing Motion With Progress

Watching another tutorial, buying another book, joining another group — all of it feels productive, but none of it is the same as actually practising the skill. It's easy to spend weeks in preparation mode, collecting resources and information, while never quite getting around to the uncomfortable part where you actually try and possibly fail at the real thing.

    • Set a rule that for every hour of research, you spend at least as long doing.
    • Notice when "just one more resource" becomes a way of avoiding starting.
    • Ask yourself honestly: would doing the thing badly today teach me more than researching it again?

Preparation isn't worthless, to be clear — a reasonable amount of it genuinely helps. The trap is when preparation becomes a comfortable substitute for the scarier, messier, far more useful step of actually attempting the real thing.

Mistake Three: Treating One Bad Result as the Final Verdict

A failed attempt, a poor mark, or an embarrassing stumble in front of others feels enormous in the moment, and it's tempting to read it as proof you're simply not cut out for whatever you're trying to learn. But a single result is just one data point, gathered on one particular day, under one particular set of circumstances. Treating it as a permanent verdict on your ability is where a temporary setback turns into a permanent story you tell yourself.

Separate the result from your identity. "That attempt didn't work" is useful information. "I'm bad at this" is a story, and it's usually wrong.

It helps to say the fair version of the sentence out loud instead. Not "I failed," but "that particular approach didn't work this time, under these conditions, and here's what I'd try differently."

Mistake Four: Comparing Your Chapter One to Someone Else's Chapter Twenty

It's brutally easy to compare your clumsy first attempts to someone else's polished, practised result and conclude you're simply not as capable. What that comparison misses is the years, the failed attempts, and the quiet practice that person put in before they got good — none of which is visible from the outside. Every expert was once catastrophically bad at the thing they're now known for.

If you need a comparison at all, compare yourself to where you were a month ago. That's the only fair measuring stick, because it's the only one working with the same starting conditions.

Remember too that the polished result you're comparing yourself against is almost always a highlight reel, not a full record. Nobody posts the failed drafts, the abandoned attempts, or the months of quiet, unremarkable practice that came before the thing you're actually looking at.

Mistake Five: Skipping the Boring Fundamentals

The flashy, advanced stuff is tempting to jump straight to, because it feels more exciting than the basics. But skipping fundamentals to get to the interesting part usually means building on shaky ground, and it shows up later as confusion that seems to come from nowhere. Most of the time, that confusion actually traces back to a gap in the boring basics that got rushed through too early.

If something advanced consistently doesn't make sense, it's worth going back and honestly checking whether the fundamentals underneath it are actually solid.

Fundamentals also tend to be the boring parts precisely because they're repetitive, and repetition is exactly what makes them automatic. Rushing past that repetition to reach the exciting stuff just means you'll be doing the boring parts badly, later, at the worst possible moment.

Mistake Six: Learning Alone With No One to Check Your Work

Self-directed learning has real advantages, but learning entirely in isolation means nobody's around to catch your blind spots, correct a wrong assumption before it becomes a habit, or simply keep you accountable when motivation dips. It's easy to practise a mistake confidently for months without realising it, purely because nobody ever told you otherwise.

Find even one person — a mentor, a peer, an online community — who can occasionally look at what you're doing and tell you honestly if something's off. This is a core part of the philosophy behind Bogan University: real progress comes from a mix of doing, getting feedback, and adjusting, not from muddling through completely alone.

Every one of these mistakes is common precisely because the underlying instincts — do more, avoid discomfort, compare yourself to others, skip to the fun bits, go it alone — feel perfectly reasonable in the moment. Recognising them for what they are is most of the battle. The rest is just steady, unglamorous practice.

Don't expect to eliminate every one of these mistakes for good, either. Even experienced learners slip back into them occasionally, especially under stress or when starting something completely new again. The real skill isn't avoiding them permanently, it's noticing quickly when you've slipped into one and course-correcting before too much time has passed.
