Everyone with a phone can post advice these days, and a lot of them do, with tremendous confidence and questionable results. Somewhere out there is a bloke with zero actual runs on the board telling you exactly how to invest your savings, fix your relationship, or train for a marathon, delivered with the swagger of someone who's done it a thousand times. Learning to tell good practical advice from confident nonsense is, honestly, one of the most valuable skills you can develop — more valuable than any single piece of advice itself, because it protects you from all the bad advice you haven't encountered yet.

Want expert help putting this into practice? Bogan University can guide you through it.

Confidence is not the same thing as competence

This is the single biggest trap online, and it catches smart people constantly. Confidence is cheap to produce and expensive to fake-detect, because our brains are wired to trust people who sound certain. But certainty is a personality trait, not a qualification. Some of the most competent tradespeople, doctors, and mentors you'll ever meet talk in careful qualifiers — "it depends," "usually, but not always," "here's what's worked for me" — while some of the least reliable voices online speak in absolutes with zero hedging at all.

Train yourself to notice when confidence is doing the persuading instead of substance. Ask: if you stripped out the tone and just looked at what's actually being claimed, would it still convince you? If the answer's no, the confidence was carrying the argument, not the content.

A simple trick that helps: imagine the exact same advice delivered flatly, without the punchy headline or the dramatic music. If it still sounds sensible written out plainly on a piece of paper, it's probably worth considering. If it only sounds convincing with the performance attached, treat that as a warning sign rather than a selling point.

Check the track record, not the follower count

A large audience proves someone is good at getting attention. It doesn't prove they're good at the thing they're giving advice about — those are genuinely separate skills, and plenty of people have mastered only the first one. Before you act on advice, do a bit of quiet digging.

    • Look for evidence of the actual outcome, not just the advice itself — results, before-and-afters, specifics — rather than just an opinion stated well.
    • Check how long they've been doing the underlying thing, not just how long they've been posting about it. Those clocks often start at very different times.
    • See how they handle being wrong. Someone who's corrected in the comments and responds with "good catch, I'll clarify that" is more trustworthy than someone who deletes criticism or doubles down.
    • Look for consistency over time, not just one polished post — reliable advice tends to hold up across months, not just go viral once.

Spot advice that's really just a sales pitch

A huge amount of "free advice" online exists purely to soften you up for a sale — a course, a coaching program, a product. That's not automatically dishonest, plenty of genuinely good teachers also sell things, but it does mean you need to read a little more carefully.

Watch for advice that conveniently identifies a problem only their paid product solves, especially when the free version deliberately withholds the one detail that would let you actually act on it. Be wary of urgency and scarcity language wrapped around advice — "the window is closing," "only for people who act now" — that's a sales technique borrowed and bolted onto content that shouldn't need it. Good free advice tends to be genuinely useful on its own, complete enough to actually try, with the paid offer as a separate, optional next step rather than a hidden requirement.

Test advice small before you commit big

Even advice from a genuinely trustworthy source might not fit your specific situation. The fix isn't blind trust or blind skepticism — it's a small, cheap test before a big commitment.

    • Trial it on a small scale first. Try the budgeting method on one pay cycle before overhauling your entire financial life around it.
    • Give it a fair, defined trial period, not a single attempt. One rough go doesn't disprove a method; a few weeks of honest effort tells you more.
    • Keep a simple record of what happens so you're judging results, not just vague impressions after the fact.
    • Be willing to drop it if it genuinely doesn't work for you, even if it worked brilliantly for someone else — advice is a starting point, not a religion.

Weight advice from doers over advice from talkers

There's a real difference between someone who's built the thing and someone who's built a following by talking about the thing. Neither voice is automatically worthless, people who study and communicate well genuinely add value, but they carry different kinds of authority and it pays to know which one you're listening to.

A useful habit: for any advice that matters, try to find at least one source who's actually done the specific thing recently, with their hands, in circumstances similar to yours. A retired tradie's advice on wiring your own switchboard carries different weight than a content creator's advice on the same topic, even if the content creator's video is better lit and better edited. Production quality and lived experience are not the same currency.

Build your own trusted circle over time

The strongest defence against bad advice isn't a single checklist — it's slowly building a small, real network of people whose judgement you've tested and found solid. That circle should be a mix: a few people who've actually done the specific things you care about, a couple of generalists with good all-round sense, and at least one person who's comfortable disagreeing with you, because an echo chamber of agreement is its own kind of unreliable advice.

This is really the whole point behind the way we do things here — Bogan University was built on the idea that real expertise is earned through doing, not through polish, and that a healthy dose of skepticism is just good manners when someone's asking for your trust, your time, or your money. Check the track record, watch for the sell, test small before you commit big, and lean on the people who've genuinely done the thing. That's how you build advice you can actually rely on.
