There's a particular kind of stuck that has nothing to do with ability and everything to do with standing at the starting line for so long your feet have gone numb. You want to learn the thing — whatever it is, guitar, budgeting, Spanish, welding — but every time you go to start, there's suddenly a load of washing that needs doing. If that sounds familiar, this one's for you. Not the big-picture philosophy of learning, just the nuts and bolts of getting off the couch and actually starting, badly, today.

Want expert help putting this into practice? Bogan University can guide you through it.

Name the exact thing you're avoiding

"I want to learn X" is too vague to start. Vague goals are comfortable precisely because they're impossible to fail — you can't fail at something you never properly defined. The fix is embarrassingly simple: get specific enough that starting becomes obvious.

Swap "I want to learn to cook" for "I want to be able to make a proper roast dinner without a recipe in front of me." Swap "I want to get better with money" for "I want to know exactly where every dollar of my pay goes each fortnight." The specific version tells you exactly what step one looks like. The vague version just sits there making you feel guilty.

    • Write the goal as a sentence, not a topic. "Learn guitar" is a topic. "Play one song all the way through without stopping" is a goal.
    • Make it small enough to laugh at. If your first goal doesn't feel almost too easy, it's still too big. Shrink it again.
    • Give it a rough date, not a deadline. "By the end of the month" creates urgency without the pressure of a hard deadline you'll beat yourself up over missing.

    Understand why you're actually stuck

Inertia isn't laziness — it's usually one of three very ordinary things: you don't know where to start, you're scared of looking silly, or the first step feels bigger than it needs to be. Knowing which one is holding you up changes what you do about it.

If it's "I don't know where to start," the answer is to stop trying to find the perfect starting point and just pick a reasonable one — you can course-correct once you're moving, but you can't steer a parked car. If it's "I'm scared of looking silly," the answer is to accept that looking silly is a temporary and completely normal part of learning anything, and nobody worth listening to will think less of you for it. If it's "the first step feels too big," the answer is almost always to shrink the step, not to wait until you feel braver.

    • Pick the smallest possible first action. Not "learn to swim" — "put your togs on and stand in the shallow end." The tinier the action, the less resistance your brain puts up.
    • Do it before you're ready. Readiness is a feeling that shows up after you start, not before. Waiting for it is waiting for something that only arrives once you've already begun.

Choose your first resource and stop shopping around

Picking a learning resource when you're a total beginner is like picking a mechanic when you know nothing about cars — everything looks equally convincing and equally terrifying. The good news is that at the very beginning, the resource matters far less than actually using one.

Give yourself a strict half-hour to choose. Search for "[the skill] for complete beginners," pick whichever free video series or article has decent comments and doesn't assume you already know the jargon, and commit to it for two weeks minimum before you're allowed to go looking for something better.

    • Free is fine to start. You don't need to spend a cent to find out if you even like doing this. Save the paid course for once you know you're sticking with it.
    • Local know-how counts. A neighbour who welds, a workmate who's handy with spreadsheets, the bloke at the hardware store — a five-minute real conversation can save you a week of confused googling.

Give yourself permission to be genuinely bad at it

This is the step people skip, and it's the one that determines whether you quit in week two. Everyone who is good at something now was, at some earlier point, embarrassingly bad at it. There is no shortcut around the bad stage — it's not a design flaw in you, it's just what learning looks like from the inside.

The people who stick with new skills aren't the ones who happen to be naturally gifted. They're the ones who made peace with being bad for a while and kept showing up anyway. That's a decision you can make on purpose, right now, before you've even started.

    • Expect your first attempts to be rough, and plan for it. If you know going in that attempt one will be ordinary, it won't knock your confidence when it is.
    • Compare yourself to yourself last week, not to an expert. Comparing your day-three cooking to a chef's twenty-year career is a rigged competition you were never going to win.
    • Keep the evidence of your early attempts. A photo of your wobbly first shelf or your first clunky paragraph is oddly satisfying to look back on once you're further along — it proves the improvement is real.

Map out your first 30 days

Thirty days is long enough to build a real habit and short enough not to feel like a life sentence. Don't plan the whole month in detail — plan the shape of it, and let the details sort themselves out as you go.

Think of the month in three rough stages: the first week is just about showing up and getting familiar with the basics, even if nothing clicks yet. The middle two weeks are where the actual skill-building happens — repetition, small improvements, the slump where it stops being new and starts being work. The final week is about doing one slightly bigger thing that pulls together what you've learned, even if it's rough around the edges.

    • Week one — show up daily, keep it short. Ten to fifteen minutes, no exceptions, no judging the output.
    • Weeks two and three — push through the slump. This is where most people quit because it's stopped being novel and exciting. Knowing that in advance makes it easier to push through.
    • Week four — attempt something real. Cook the full dinner. Play the whole song. Build the actual shelf. Use what you've learned on something with a bit of stake to it.

    Just start the thing

All the planning in the world won't replace the moment you actually pick up the guitar, open the spreadsheet, or put your togs on and get in the water. The advice above exists purely to make that moment less scary and more likely to happen today rather than "someday." You don't need a perfect plan, a fancy setup, or permission from anyone — you need a small goal, a decent free resource, ten minutes, and the willingness to be bad at it for a bit. That's the entire enrolment process at Bogan University: no application forms, no prerequisites, just you deciding to start.
