Universities love bragging about their enrolment numbers and retention rates — how many students signed up, how many actually stuck around to finish. Turns out those same two numbers matter just as much when the "university" in question is just you, teaching yourself a skill on your own time. If you've ever signed up for a course with big plans and quietly ghosted it by week three, you already know: getting yourself enrolled is easy, keeping yourself enrolled is the real challenge. Here's how to improve both numbers in your own one-person learning operation.

Want expert help putting this into practice? Bogan University can guide you through it.

Your Enrolment Number Is Lower Than You Think

"Enrolling" in something isn't the moment you buy the course or bookmark the tutorial — it's the moment you actually start doing the work. Plenty of people count themselves as "learning Spanish" or "getting into coding" because they downloaded an app once, which is a bit like counting yourself as enrolled at uni because you looked at the website. Be honest about your real enrolment number: how many things have you actually started, properly, this year? A smaller, honest number is far more useful than an inflated one that includes things you never really began.

Retention Drops Hardest in the First Two Weeks

Just like at any institution, the biggest drop-off in self-directed learning happens right at the start — the first fortnight, before the new habit has bedded in and before you've seen any real payoff yet. This is exactly when motivation is weakest and the old routine is strongest. If you can get yourself through those first two weeks with some kind of structure in place — a set time, a set place, a small non-negotiable minimum — your odds of sticking around long-term jump dramatically. The early days are the expensive ones; budget extra effort for them.

    Track Your Own Numbers

Real institutions track enrolment and retention because the numbers tell them where the system is failing. Do the same for yourself. Keep a simple log: what did you start, when, and are you still doing it? Once a month, look honestly at your own "retention rate." If you're starting six things and finishing one, that's useful information — it tells you you're probably starting too many things at once, or picking things for the wrong reasons, rather than that you're simply bad at learning.

    Design for Re-Enrolment, Not Perfection

Institutions know a chunk of students will drop a subject and need to re-enrol later, and they build systems for that instead of treating it as failure. Do the same for yourself. If you fall off a learning goal, the answer isn't to declare it a permanent failure and never speak of it again — it's to re-enrol. Pick it back up, quietly, without the guilt trip. Most successful self-taught skills weren't a straight line; they were started, dropped, and restarted two or three times before they finally stuck. That's not a failure rate, that's just how learning actually works for real people with real lives.

    Reduce the "Administrative" Friction

A surprising amount of dropout — at real institutions and in your own head — comes down to boring admin friction rather than the difficulty of the material itself. If every session requires you to dig out materials, remember where you left off, or set up your space from scratch, you've built in a tiny obstacle every single time, and tiny obstacles add up to quitting. Keep your materials in one place, leave your notes open to the last page, and make starting your next session as frictionless as physically possible.

Celebrate the Completions, Not Just the Starts

It's easy to get excited about starting something new — new notebook, new app, new energy. It's much harder to get excited about the unglamorous middle and the finish line. Deliberately mark completions: finishing a course, hitting a skill milestone, using the new skill for real the first time. This rebalances your brain's reward system away from the dopamine hit of starting new things and toward the genuine satisfaction of finishing them, which is ultimately what actually changes your life.

Watch for Your Own Early Warning Signs

Every "student" who eventually drops out gives off warning signs long before they officially quit — sessions getting shorter, gaps between them getting longer, excuses getting more creative. The same is true when the student is you. Learn to notice your own early warning signs: are you suddenly "too tired" for sessions you used to manage fine? Has your set time slid from morning to "later" to "tomorrow"? Catching this drift in week two is far easier to fix than trying to resurrect a goal you quietly abandoned two months ago.

    • Sessions getting shorter than planned, several times in a row
    • Genuine excitement fading into a sense of obligation
    • Increasingly vague excuses replacing specific, one-off reasons

Compare Yourself Against Your Own Baseline

Institutions compare cohorts against each other. You should compare yourself only against your own history. Someone else's retention rate — the mate who never misses a session, the influencer who studies at 5am every day — tells you nothing useful about your own situation, and chasing their numbers is a fast way to feel like a failure for no good reason. Your only meaningful comparison is you last month versus you this month. Are you starting fewer things and finishing more of them than you used to? That's the only metric that actually matters.

Treat a Dip as a Data Point, Not a Verdict

A single missed session or a rough fortnight isn't a collapse of the whole effort, no matter how it feels in the moment. Real institutions expect a percentage of students to have a rocky patch without writing them off entirely, and you should extend yourself the same patience. Look at the dip, work out honestly what caused it, adjust something small if needed, and get back to your normal rhythm. Overreacting to a single bad week by declaring the whole goal a failure is, ironically, usually what turns a small dip into a genuine dropout.

Good enrolment and retention numbers aren't about willpower or being a "disciplined person" — they're about designing your own habits the way a decent institution designs its systems: honestly, with friction removed, and with room for people to restart. It's a mindset that runs straight through everything Bogan University stands for — real progress, tracked honestly, with zero shame for the false starts along the way.
